The “Invisible Killer” In Your Factory: Nox. How To Deal With It?

In category Industrial News

In a certain chemical industrial park, a company was ordered by the environmental protection bureau to rectify within a limited period due to excessive NOx emissions. Surprisingly, the company’s boiler system was not old, and the production line had been operating normally. The person in charge was puzzled: “We have always complied. How could we exceed the standard now?”

In fact, he overlooked a kind of gas that is invisible and intangible but may be “quietly” emitted every day – NOx (nitrogen oxides). This “invisible killer” in the factory is quietly influencing the company’s compliance status.

Nox

What exactly is NOx? Why is it called an “invisible killer”?

NOx, the full name of Nitrogen Oxides, refers to nitrogen oxides such as nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).

They are generally derived from industrial combustion equipment, such as boilers, kilns, heating furnaces, cracking furnaces, etc. As long as you have open flames, fuel, and air involved in combustion, NOx will inevitably be produced.

However, its “destructive power” is far beyond your imagination:

  • Forming acid rain: NOx enters the atmosphere and reacts with water to form nitric acid, corroding metals and destroying soil.
  • Harming the human body: Inhaling NO₂ can cause respiratory irritation, aggravate asthma, and even induce emphysema.
  • Producing ozone pollution: NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will form ozone under sunlight, which is the main precursor of PM2.5.
  • Aggravates greenhouse effect: Although NOx itself is not a greenhouse gas, the ozone it induces is one of the most potent greenhouse gas components.

Therefore, the environmental protection department has a zero tolerance attitude towards it.

Industry data: NOx emissions are becoming a “high-voltage line” for industrial enterprises

You may want to ask: Is there really a lot of NOx in my factory? Here is a set of shocking data:

  • power plant NOx emissions exceed 5 million tons per year, accounting for about 30% of the country’s total NOx emissions;
  • Cement industry NOx emissions account for about 20%, especially in the clinker burning system;
  • NOx emissions in the chemical, metallurgical, glass, steel and other industries have grown rapidly, becoming the “second source of pollution”;
  • Starting from 2023, many provinces will implement ultra-low nitrogen oxide emission standards, such as boiler NOx emission limits below 30mg/m³ (Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong and other places).

In other words, NOx is no longer an “option”, but a “life and death line” that determines whether you can continue to produce.

Where does NOx come from? Let’s start with “combustion”

The generation of NOx is closely related to combustion conditions, and mainly includes three mechanisms:

  1. Thermal NOx: At high temperatures, nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂) in the air react to generate NO;
  2. Fuel NOx: Generated when the fuel contains nitrogen (such as coal, heavy oil, biomass);
  3. Prompt NOx: Generated at the flame front in a short period of time, commonly found in fuel-rich areas.

Generally speaking, the higher the combustion temperature, the more oxygen, and the more intense the combustion, the easier it is to generate NOx.

Traditional burners are mainly based on efficiency, with high temperatures and concentrated flames, so they naturally “burn faster” and “emit more”.

Low NOx Burner Technology: Not a fire extinguisher, but a “fire control expert”

The core goal of Low NOx burner technology: reduce NOx generation, rather than purify it afterwards.

It solves the NOx problem from the root and achieves emission reduction through the following technical paths:

TechnologyPrinciple Summary
Staged CombustionDivides the combustion process into multiple zones to control local oxygen concentration and temperature.
Flue Gas Recirculation (FGR)Introduces a portion of flue gas to dilute flame temperature and suppress NOx formation.
Low Excess Air RatioPrecisely controls the amount of combustion air to reduce excessive oxygen in reactions.
Burner Structure OptimizationModifies nozzle structure and flame shape to achieve uniform and gradual combustion.

Professional data shows that a high-efficiency Low NOx burner can reduce NOx emissions by 50%~85%, easily meeting the current environmental protection standards.

The application effect of Low NOx in different industries

Cement plant: kiln head + preheater transformation

  • Original NOx emission value: 320mg/m³
  • Value after transformation: 85mg/m³
  • Technical solution: first-level wind classification + flue gas recirculation burner
  • Effect: Emissions decreased by 73%, thermal efficiency increased by 3%, and compliance resumption of production

Chemical plant: cracking furnace low nitrogen transformation

  • Original NOx emission value: 180mg/m³
  • Value after transformation: 42mg/m³
  • Effect: Obtained the “Green Factory” benchmark certification and applied for an energy-saving subsidy of 800,000 yuan

Industrial and commercial boiler room

  • Transformation method: Replace the traditional burner with a premixed low nitrogen type
  • Payback period: <1.5 years (energy saving + compliance + subsidies)

Why do we need a Low Nox burner?

NOx is not a problem you can “see”, but it can actually:

  • Give you a ticket
  • Make you stop production within a certain period of time
  • Affect financing rating
  • Slow down the pace of green transformation of enterprises

Low NOx Burner Technology is not some kind of high-end “concept”, but a realistic, mature and widely used solution.

If your factory is still using old combustion equipment, NOx emissions are critical or often “step on the line”, then now is the time to seriously consider it.
